At approximately 1104 hours, Caroline's ECC dispatched Bowling Green's Volunteers for a possible residential structure fire. Also on the initial assignment were Ladysmith Co. 2, Frog Level Co.5, and a career medic unit out of Bowling Green. Once the medic unit arrived on scene and confirmed a working structure fire, A.P. Hill Engine 8 and Chief 7 were added to the assignment as well as an engine and tanker from Hanover County. Engine 2 w/2 arrived first and began stretching attack lines. Chief 7 (Thomas) arrived and assumed command. Wagon 1 w/5 was assigned RIT. Engine 5 w/3 was assigned water supply and Engine 8 w/4 was assigned ventilation and assisted with fire attack.
The fire extended from the kitchen and living room areas into a back porch. The first floor fire was knocked down quickly after the over one hundred rounds of ammunition fired off. However, the fire extended into the attic from the outside through the back porch roof. The attic seemed to be easily accessible but was extremely cluttered with furniture and other items. It was also discovered that the attic was partitioned off into two sections. This made it nearly impossible to reach the bulk of the fire in the attic.
The incident was brought under control at 1400hrs and command was transferred to Chief 22 (Harding) at 1446hrs. Due to daytime temperatures two additional ambulances and multiple tankers and additional engine companies were dispatched from Spotsylvania, King George, King William, and Essex Counties. Extensive salvage and overhaul was performed and many valuable items were removed without damage.
