By Chief John Bradford Thomas
May 12, 2008

A basement fire on Coghill St was quickly contained thanks to Engine 1 and their less than 2 minute response. Chief 1 arrived to find smoke showing from the first floor and basement of a residential structure at 1630hrs. Engine 1 laid out and Engine 8 (Fort A. P. Hill) secured their water. A 1 3/4" attack line was stretched and the crew quicklly contained the fire to the room of origin.
It was determined the fire was started when the furnace malfunctioned after it became wet due to the flooding of the basement. The Squad Company continued their dedication to the citizens by pumping out the flooded basement. The fire damage was minimal, however the water damage was a bit more extensive. All units returned to service by 1830hrs.

Units: Engine 1, Squad 1, Utility 1, Engine 8, Engine 4
